International engineering company KCI Limited (Kinetics Controls and Innovation) is sponsoring the Aberdeen Boat Club (ABC) men’s first squad for the 2006 racing season. The sponsorship deal comes as a huge boost to the squad which struggles to meet the high costs associated with travelling to away races and training camps.“The majority of the squad are students or full-time athletes with no income so the support from KCI is a huge boost” says the Aberdeen coach Ali Paterson.

Aberdeen squad has already travelled to Norway and Belgium this season, as well as extensively within Great Britain. All the hard work is paying off with the crew finishing as fastest Scots in the 7.5km London Eights Head of the River Race in March. Subsequent races over the 2km distance have seen continued successes with athletes selected for the Scottish Commonwealth Rowing Championships team for August.

The last six weeks has been a very busy period for the team seeing them travel to the Scottish Championships where they collected a haul of medals (see photograph), Marlow International and the prestigious Henley Royal Regattas where the Aberdeen crew took part in the Britannia Challenge Cup for coxed fours and reached the semi-finals.  This was an excellent result for the squad who have been competing at the top of domestic and continental competition throughout the 2006 season, with the potential for more success to come in the final events of the year including the National Rowing Championships of Great Britain which will see them pull on their Scotland colours to compete in the Home International Regatta and Commonwealth Rowing Championships in Strathclyde later this month.

Squad athlete, David McNeill comments that “It’s during these very busy periods of racing that expenditure rockets so we are all thankful to KCI. I’m sure that with their support we can continue to build on an already successful season.”

Specialising in leak sealing, isolation barrier systems, pipeline intervention and other services for the oil and gas industry, KCI is delighted to be backing the club and hopes that the additional funding will help the crew to add to its already impressive list of honours. www.kciltd.co.uk  www.abc-dee.com
